New MVI rules towards bikes?
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:46:06 AM »
So everyone prolly knows about the new rules for cars, no aftermarket lift/lowering kits (unless inspected by a tech and pased) and no exausts louder then stock.  Does anyone know if these things are transfering over to bikes?  I know a bunch of us adjust the height on the bike using aftermarket dogbones, and tons of us use aftermarket pipes if not complete exaust systems.  So does anyone know the offical standing on this when it comes to bikes?

Also kind of intrested to know if the new 2 year MVI is for bikes too?  Or is it still every year for us?

From what I seen passed for pipes on other bikes when I was getting mine inspected, it didn't seem to matter how loud it was..

That may change on the 1st of June. The new inspection requirement manuals are due out then.  Rumor says modifications are not allowed, but the details on the word MODIFICATION are kinda sketchy. Some are pointing at removing the baffles, others say anything not OEM. Typical its up to the garage or individual to interpret wording. But like I said that is rumor.

might be the best thing to do....
I did hear something about a crack down  on "louder than Stock" exhaust systems..I know this has been in place before but who knows what will and won't be enforced now..

I can tell you that the Nova Scotia Vehicle Compliance Officers enforce things to the letter and beyond. I work along the Route from a rock quarry and a major highway. When those boys don't have a truck to pull over they have some sweet little old ladies car jacked up on the side of the road. Tow trucks not far away.

not sure if the pipe on my bike is any louder then stock, so I might have that going for me :P Crotch rockets are just damn loud to begin with.  But I am wondering how Harley owners will fit into this?  Stock they are usally louder then most trains?

so I just went down to Honda Power house here and talked to them.  As it sits my bike won't pass because of the Flush mount singles on the front, but they told me that as of June 1st, they won't be able to fail it.  I guess the new laws take the ownus off the shop and place it on the bike owner.  They can pass it, but if a cop does pull you over and decide to fine you, the fines will be more :|

so I dug a bit more and found some more intresting things out.  The new laws state that the one things shops have to check are the following:

wheels/tires
Suspession
Major Nuts/Bolts
Breaks
Headlight direction (wtf?)
Taillight Direction (again wtf?)

Other then that, its going to be up to the shop are to what they feel might be a "Safety issue" so not sure what that means??

How are you to know what is wrong with the way your signals are mounted. As long as they are amber in the front, amber or red in the back and flash. What is wrong

One other thing, you now have the option of a second opinion, don't know about fees  you will have to pay each shop I guess.

the thing with the lights is that they should each be visable at a 45o angle from the other side of the bike or something to that effect.  Once again it was always up to the shop to make the choice on a pass or fail.
